Can babies perceive color?
My friend and I created a mobile this weekend for her baby, and it got me to thinking about what a baby can perceive, color-wise. When we were deciding what to hang on the mobile, we had a choice of colors- should we use brights, pastels, or just black and white? What colors would my friend's baby prefer?
What I've read is that babies are drawn to bright, primary colors. Infants intuitively prefer to look at high-contrast edges and patterns. As large black and white patterns present the highest possible contrast to the eye, those colors are therefore the most visible and attractive to babies. But by two months, babies eyes have strengthened, and they can see just as much as an adult. Studies have shown that color perception is not innate, but rather acquired after birth through experience and exposure.(source) So, my suggestion is, don't worry about scientific mumbo-jumbo about babies preferring one color over another. Expose them to all the colors of the rainbow, and they'll be able to appreciate the subtleties sooner than you realize.

My mom covered my room in butterflies like that when I was a baby, and to this day I am terrified of them (butterflies). I'm not kidding!
wow, i'm really sorry to hear that! so far, my friend's baby seems to really like them.
