Reader Dilemma- home gym colors

Reader Rachael wrote in to ask for advice about her workout room. Let's see if we can't help her out!

I was wondering if you could recommend one or 2 colors to paint my home gym. It's an empty basement room, 11x14. I was thinking something relaxing yet energizing, perhaps a calming blue or toned down lime green. What do you think?

I'm always fascinated by the reaction color elicits in individuals- Rachael says the existing soft peach walls make her want to curl up and take a nap. Generally, the warm hues are recommended for encouraging activity. But perhaps this specific tone is too soft and cozy. There's always a very personal aspect of color-what is calming to one can be stimulating to another.

The first thing I would do, to give the feeling of space and light, would be to add some large, floor to ceiling mirrors. The room will hopefully feel more expansive that way, since there are no windows. You don't want to feel closed in.
Also, make sure there is adequate lighting in the space, otherwise, the dim environment will encourage relaxation, instead of stimulation!

Here is an image of what I would NOT do. Dark, cave like, this feels way too oppressive to be conducive to exercise. Yikes....

Going a bit over the top in the other direction, the thing I like about this home gym is the energizing orange and other active, bright, colors. There will be no napping in this space.

A warm, yellow-green like chartreuse or lime, could be energizing, while still relaxing. It's a great way to bring a sense of the outdoors inside. The warm undertones keep the green from being too calming.

Perhaps a perky blue with green undertones? People often see blue as a calming color, but there are certainly variations that are quite active, like this example.

Those are my thoughts. Do you guys have other suggestions for Rachael's home gym? Anyone have one of their own they are especially proud of?

I like the idea of a light, soothing colour... do NOT like that dark room... VERY unmotivating... the colour and lighting should make the person working out LOOK GOOD! Afterall isn't that what we want to get out of working out.

I'm with Rachael about the peachy pink color in the 1st picture. Makes me want a cosy chair, iced tea and a stack of great magazines. I like the idea of an energized green grass color(s) and maybe some other nature colors. It would make me feel like I was doing something fresh and outdoorsy even if it was raining in January. I also like the mirror idea. I wonder what the space planning of the gym equipment means for the current lighting? May need more to keep away the gloom if the final paint choice paint is a more saturated color.

Ok, I am finally ready to paint! I decided to go with Benjamin Moore's Lemon Drops. I was really inspired by the first photo. I don't want to invest in floor to ceiling mirrors, so I am going to get a standing full length mirror. I'll post photos when I'm finished painting!!!

good luck, and definitely let us know when you're done so we can see the results!

as for the mirror, you might be able to find some large sheets of glass on craigslist, or freecycle.org in your area. but a large full length mirror is a good start.

definitely add more lighting, too, as Cathryn suggested. it will keep you awake and energized.

Hi Rachel,

I was looking at your "reader dilemma-home gym colors" and really like the orange color in the 5th photo. Is there any way I can find out what that actual color is called? We are ready to paint! Thank you Rachel!

Hi Dawn,
i'm glad you've found inspiration for your house in this post.

Unfortunately, i don't have the name of the orange paint color.

it's really important to understand that perception of color is based upon the context in which you are viewing it. the kind of light in the space, the colors surrounding it; this makes all the difference in the world. So, the way the orange looks in this image might look completely different in your space under those specific conditions.

best to bring some paint chips home to test out in your room, and paint a 2'x'2 board with the potential color to get a better feel for how it will look bigger. Good luck!

My wife and I just built our home gym and we had some disputes over what color it should be. She wanted a slate-blue and I wanted a bright, bold yellow. We ended up compromising on "Dare Devil Red." It's a bright, blood-red color. We only painted the red on the small end wall and covered the rest of the room in a light tan (with hints of green and yellow to match the red). The minute you step foot in the room, you feel excited and energized to work out!

In short, I'd recommend a bold color for a focus wall, with light surrounding walls to maximize light.

Cheers!

Wow am I seeing things? Or is your room painted in a fade (between 2 colours)?

If so, is wall paper? If not, then how on earth did you do that??

??? Very confused!

Crystal- i think what you are seeing is the lighting: dark near the ceiling, and brighter near the floor where it reflects off the carpet
