How to work violet into your interior
With my grape-colored sofas ordered, and on their way any day now, I am chomping at the bit to start decorating my living room. But, I shall refrain until my lovely furniture arrives, as I really want to make sure the rug I find works well with the sofas and the space, now that it will be doing double duty as my dining room, too. I know, I know, rug selections should be first, but how many people in real life start from scratch, anyways? Certainly not me.
So, back to my brainstorms about what to do when decorating with purple (actually, the correct terminology is violet). It doesn't have to feel romper-roomesque just because your couches are not brown, beige, taupe, gray, or black. Here are some random images and my musings from my inspiration files:
Starting on the more dramatic side...If designer Jamie Drake can embrace violet, so can I! Seeing his daring fuchsia settee, I certainly feel less concerned about my subdued grape fabric.

I love the incorporation of soft blues that carry throughout the space. He certainly isn't afraid of color, you know?image source
Here is a simply edible grape sectional, set off by bright pillows and artwork. I personally prefer something other than stark walls, but it sure does look bright and sunny. Ah, the wonders of photography and lighting.image source
Hm, scrumptious. Very girly pink and violet, but with such a rich, luscious tone, how can you not love it. image source
Sticking withe the darker tones, here's another velvet sofa, with a completely different feeling paired with blue gray wallpaper and black and white rug.image source
Another take on violet with shades of gray. Quite elegantimage source
And here's a slightly more subdued look, with the rich eggplant walls acting like a warm hug. Very cozy.image source
Violet as a neutral? How about this lovely lilac wall acting as a foil behind the persimmon fainting sofa.image source
My colleague Barbara Jacobs, among other things, designs rugs. Here, she has paired a violet sofa (very similar in hue to those which I ordered, I think) with a lovely warm rug in sand and browns. And if those were enough, here is a sampling of images suggested by my super generous colleague Kelley from Arte Styling.
I guess there -are- lots of options when it comes to decorating with violet! Once the sofas arrive (hopefully sooner than later!) I'll snap some photos of them in their new space and get your opinions on what you would do.

Rachel - you are so good to me! Thanks for the mention...again! I am absolutely convinced those violet sofas are going to work beautifully with your golden walls. i'm gonna send you a photo from a job i just did with that exact color combo.
happy holidays!
Oops, I just commented about the neutrality of Purple on an older post you had. Thanks for showing the rug, Rachel - it's wool with silk and Allo accents. Actually, there are copper-colored silk, and purple allo design lines there as well as the chocolate brown design lines.
How exciting for you! I feel the color combo of your walls and the sofa will be such a fun palette that can be taken in many different directions. Can't wait to see your progress with it. BTW, I adore your descriptions of color, such as " a hug of color.." So wonderful! And you deserve every nomination plus some that you get for the Homies!
if I may - I have a question. You mentioned that it is customary to purchase a rug before the furniture. Honestly - I have never been able to wrap my head around that approach. Isn't it 1) easier to cart home rug samples to match furniture than the other way around? 2) Isn't it more economically feesible to change out a rug than a sofa when one feels the need to redecorate?
I am probably totally wrong in this thinking and would love advice on this...
Oh, I love it! I just did a soft violet home office for a client and a deep aubergine door for another client. This area of the color wheel is really growing on me! I can't wait to see the couches. I'm sure Kelly is right and they will be a hit!
Karen- i actually feel the same way as you. until i read Annie's post on "Rugs come first",(http://ow.ly/RI9O) i had always preached to go for the big purchases like sofas first. I guess i can see it from both ways- the sofa is $$$, but probably more likely a classic, more "neutral" piece around which you can swap out decor. i think it's more about selecting the 'feature' piece and then working around that. since rugs can get pretty crazy, it's best to start with the item that will command the most attention. in our case, i can imagine we'll hold onto our sofas longer than a rug, as color preferences come and go, and i get bored easily.
but on the other hand, for example- my folks have a beautiful huge Persian rug. not something to swap out. so the sofa upholstery was really determined by the rug, instead of vice versa.
I personally never have followed the rules as dictated by interior design, although totally see their merit. life happens, and it's rare to start with a bare room with no existing pieces.
i guess rules are there to break sometimes!
Happy New Year, Rachel!! Yes - thanks for the insight. I see your point about that especially when it comes to pricier oriental rugs and all. I love learning new ideas and insights which is why I love your blog! Looking forward to an exciting 2010!
