Shuffling spaces to keep up with life

There is something so satisfying about taking a space and completely rearranging it to become more versatile. I'm of the camp that believes you can do more with less. It's about utilizing the space you do have in the most efficient, effective manner. You'd be surprised by how much dead space you can transform into useful areas.

You might have noticed that my dining room plans went straight out the window when we moved it into the living room.  (full pictures to come as soon as my rug arrives!)

And lo and behold, I actually prefer the dining room out in the open. It really felt a bit claustrophobic before. My original intent, as the room was small to begin with, was to encompass it in a rich, warm deep tone- we chose pumpkin.
But now that it is my office, the color just doesn't feel right for a work space. And yes, I get to share it with an ancient upright piano that nobody uses. (We would love to move it elsewhere, but that thing ways a TON and we'd have to hire piano movers, I'm sure.) So, the color will probably have to change again to suit the new purpose of the room. While it was a dining room, I liked the energy and mood it created. But in an office setting, I can't quite get myself to calm down and focus. Interesting, no? Notice how the function of a space can really dictate the color palette?

So, you might be wondering, what happened to the space I used to occupy for office work?

Here it is, almost emptied of all my work stuff, ready for its tranformation into...
a baby room! Our first child, a girl, is due at the beginning of June, and I'm already toying with a bazillion different color options for the room...  as you can well imagine.

We'll probably reuse our old rug from the living room, as it was rather romper-roomesque to begin with. That beige/gold arm chair you see in the corner, piled high with books, stays. We are inheriting a white crib and two white bookcases from hubbie's generous cousins. But colorwise, we could really do anything!

Oh, and my lovely handmade kite I named Paprika. I'd like her to stay, too.

Anyways, what do you think we should do?! I've got some ideas of my own, which I'll share as we go along,  but I'd love to know what you all would do. Ideas? Let your imagination run wild- a kid's room is where you can really go crazy.

It has been 21 years since I had to make baby room decisions...but I love what I have seen you do so far....so I am absolutely sure that you will make a good choice, "Trust your gut!" smiles.

I have two boys. If I could do a baby room and know it was for a girl, there'd be pink, pink, and more pink. I'd want to get my dose of pink before she grew up and could ask for purple and lime green or something typical tween like those color. Cliches be darned. Pink = girl. We'll pink = my pretend girl any way! :D

I can't wait to see what you decide to do. Have fun and enjoy!

Emom- thanks for the compliment! alas, my gut has so many great ideas and options, it will be hard to chose just one

Lori- really, you'd do pink? i guess if you're deprived of the girly experience, you want it bad. my friend Kelley painted her new baby room a lovely shade of pale pink which is actually quite palatable. maybe i can do the ceiling pink...

i like the idea of a pink ceiling. a pink room would drive me nuts. the other day i saw a mural that used metallic light gray on white...very subtle, but i loved how the metallic was used.

So excited for you, Rachel! No matter what you choose, she will definitely have a stylish, happy space. :)
I love that bird! Did you make that yourself? So fun. One thing I'm noticing is that you have two colors that are repeating in your rug and the bird - "hot pink" and turquoise. I would use this as a starting point. Maybe you use a paler turquoise on the walls? Or play with pinks a bit that aren't too delicate? If you introduced a third color, I would pull something from the bird. From the photo, looks like there's a little minty-ish, seafoam-y green and and orange. These colors could be used as accents and can keep a pink from being too "girly", if that's a concern.
Once again, I think you have a number of options. But I love the idea of a pink ceiling! Could be really cute.

Amy- that mural sounds so pretty. would love to see it-any links?

Kelly- ooh, Love your ideas! (for those of you who aren't familiar with Kelly's work, she's a very talented colorist herself)
the bird is from 10,000 VillagesI believe she is from Bali. we do have all-white furniture coming, so i could potentially paint it the accent colors...

Rachel, Congratulations!!! So happy for you.

I counted backwards. Hmmm...You DID have a good time on vacation! :-)

That settles it. You must paint the room a warm tuscan yellow. Junior will feel right at home.

That rug is awesome!

Congratulations!! I've always wanted a girl (I have one boy) so I'm a mite jealous ;-)

Love the idea of re-using the rug in the nursery - I've seen several nurseries that use bold, fun rugs as the primary colour element in the room, supported by more neutral spaces with punches of colour here and there... like in a mural or a paper bird/kite. Great idea!!

We're having a giveaway over a DesignTies - it would be great to see you enter. Drop by!!

Love the flip flop of spaces. That takes guts -- and a keen instinct. Good decision. -s

Congratulations - How exciting for you and your hubby!

I would use Paprika as your starting point pulling the turquoise and pink as the backbone colors and accessorizing with the others.

Love how you switched out the rooms, too!

Lovely to have a baby girl. I have one, had her for 28 years. LOL. My mother decorated my room pink when I was 7. It was STILL pink when I was 17. Degas ballet dancer patterned curtains, fluffy pink spread--the works. PINK WALLS OMG. I hated that room. Fine at 8, not so good at 12, horrible at 17.

I recommend choosing a soothing color for the walls and choosing bright and easy to switch out accessories. Love the bright bird and rug. Those are perfect.

More pink--in the home we have now we inherited a bedroom with pink walls, pink carpet, pink ceiling. It looked like the inside of a pepto bismol bottle. That was the room my daughter (then 16) selected for her room. "But we have to paint it a new color, right away" she said. Yup.

Congratulations Rachel (and hubby too)!!

I would take my colour inspiration from Pakrika -- turquoise and purple with bright green (like some of the squares in the rug). I think it would be bright and fun and really, it has nothing to do with the fact that I love that colour combo (well, OK, maybe just a little ;-)

How about putting colourful vinyl polka dots on the walls, and maybe some wood letters and numbers painted bright colours.

My office is a bluey-grey, and I find it a great place to work. The colours are soothing and relaxing, but the letter mural and pops of purple & turquoise give it some energy. The perfect combination of calm & inspiration to get the work done :-)

Good luck in our giveaway!!

Are you going to call your new little bundle Baby Huey?

JenniferM- love the decals, especially if you're a commitment phobic. no worries about having to repaint later on

Mona- your pepto pink room(s) sound quite over the top! i don't think i could handle so much pink

Kelly- i just love what you've done with your office. i need to repaint my new office something different that flows nicely with the gold living room and bright yellow kitchen, so it can't be too different. "you want to repaint -again-?" moaned my husband when he learned of my ambitious nesting plans

Elizabeth- you're too funny. I love it, Huey. I was actually considering the name Ruby for a while, but since i'm a redhead, i would hate for her to get teased at school if she inherited my hair color.

Rachel: Just found your blog through BossyColor. Love the stories! I'm in a rush right now to go off to my gym (last post...) Hmmm Now I'm going to REALLY take a look at all the colors! I do love going there, so I'll report back to you.
Following your blog now; will do Twitter too! thanks...

Whoop-de-doo! How very exciting Rachel. My only suggestion would be to not feel obligated to using the rug unless it works for you in the room. Sometimes we feel we must repurpose what we already have, but if it's really not right, it will surely annoy you.

If you haven't already checked out our 'kids' category, please do! We have a few rooms that might inspire you.

All the best to you and your husband (and the new little Rachel)

You're gonna have a ball with this very special project!

Jane- very good point about the obligation to the old rug. I actually still really like it, just didn't want to have it in our fancy living room anymore. but good for people to keep in mind.

Marie- love the blog pics. so cool!
