I am not a designer.....but have had hundreds of clients as a photographer. Clarity.......is my most valuable tool. My contract is clear, my phone messages are clear, and when I promise something, I try especially to be clear, even going so far as to say what I "don't" mean.....that way, I feel more relaxed, as I know I have hard-copy evidence to back up what I have said.
This all sounds wonderful doesn't it?
In reality-land, clients get pissy.....then I get pissy...and need a break.

While I am not an interior designer by any means, I do work with my clients/manufacturers. Sometimes it comes down to a very basic personality issue! There are simply people with whom you are never going to click...and the sooner we realize that, the better. I can try and try to satisfy a customer, but if they continue to be whiny, or demanding, or prima donna, I (and they) will never be happy! So, as Emom says, clarity is essential...if only to let yourself know whether to proceed.
I am not an expert myself but I deal with client's with an open mind. I listen carefully on what they want and suggest things that my client may like.
